PROFILE

Professor Wong is affiliated with the Departments of Dermatology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, and the Center of Applied Nanomedicine at the National Cheng Kung University Medical Center in Taiwan. He is recognized as one of the founders and serves on the Director Board of the Taiwanese Society of Investigative Dermatology.

His primary research interests encompass various areas, including photobiology, oncology, infectious diseases, wound healing, and abnormal scarring. Notably, he played a pioneering role in introducing photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of skin cancers in Taiwan as early as 1999.

Professor Wong was awarded a 5-year physician-scientist grant (2000-2005) from the National Health Research Institute in Taiwan. During this time, he spent 2 years as a visiting scientist at the PDT Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York, USA, under the guidance of Professor Thomas Dougherty and Dr. Allan Oseroff. Additionally, he spent nearly a year in 2016 as a visiting scientist at the lab of Professor Tung-Tien Sun in the Department of Cell Biology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.

In Professor Wong's lab, research on PDT has expanded beyond neoplastic diseases to encompass infectious diseases, wound healing, and aesthetic applications. Recently, his team made an important discovery that PDT enhances drug susceptibility to antibiotics. Collaborating with scientists from diverse fields such as medical engineering, nanotechnology, ophthalmology, microbiology, and immunology, Professor Wong aims to advance both the fundamental research and clinical applications of PDT.
